Bob Klahn's  Old Computer Bookmarks

*************************************************

This goes back to the old Timex/Sinclair/TRS-80/Coco/CPM systems.
This is a work in continous progress.
I'll try to keep at it, but I do have time limits.

Ok, I went through it on March 27, 2011. The great majority of the old
links are dead. Sorry, this is all that is left. It's been a long time.

Old Computers

This list includes many sites for info on old 8 bit systems, mostly Z-80 based, and mostly Tandy and, above all, mostly TRS-80. Some overlap, and some have the same name but those are not  necessarily duplicates.

Also, there is a TRS-80 maillist, a Tandy Usenet group, and a TRS-80 Fidonet echo.

For those not familiar with it, the Fidonet is a BBS, (Bulletin Board) based network, sorta like an amatuer version of Usenet. The big difference is, the Fidonet is much more regulated as to behavior and topicality. Each group, known as an "Echo", has  a moderator who has real and enforcable authority to boot abusers off. This is possible because the system is based on local bulletin boards, and runs through gateways and nodes. All of these are points at which the unco-operative can be cut off.

While Fidonet is still going, and I am still participating, I regret to inform you that the TRS-80 echo has been discontinued. Please look into the maillist for continuing contact.

The model 1 is the computer that got me started. I had several, plus several model 3s, and a couple clones. Early on I wrote my own checkbook program, and my own Hurkle program. If you don't remember the Hurkle, well, don't be surprised. It was an early, and primitive, number game. Mostly I was a hardware hacker. I came up with my own modifications for double clock speed, lower case, put 48K ram in the keyboard, replaced the roms with ram, put 2K ram in the keyboard area, and a couple extra key mods.
With the ram replacing the roms I modified the operating system to do things like start loading a tape (remember those) in the middle of a program without bombing, look for thename of a basic program, protect video lines from scrolling, run faster, a bit anyway, and I don't even recall what else. I actually burned a set of roms running that system, but the computer is long gone and I have no idea where it is now.

Sinclair ZX-80/81 Timex TS-1000
Once the most popular computer in the world.
Still a marvel of simplicity.
I've had several. Still have for that matter, mostly closet computers now. If, however, anyone has some books on machine language for the Timex/ZX-81 I would be interested. I still have a few ideas I want to work on.

Once I had a lot of links for the TS-1000/Sinclair here. Now none of them work. Sorry.

coco

I bought a Coco II only because 73 Amateur Radio magazine published an article on using one for slow scan TV. Until then I saw no reason to change from my Model 1 or Model 3. I had several of each. I never did get the coco going on slow scan, but I did switch to it for everything else. I only switched to a PC compatible because business was running PCs, and I had to be compatible. At that time there really wasn't that much advantage to the PC, and even less for the home hacker. If this many.

CPM

The old Control Program Microcomputer

from Digital Research. Much of the conventions for MS Dos came from CPM.
All my CPM links are now dead.

Misc.

I'm not sure of some of these. I don't get to check them all regularly.
This is all that's left of these.
